In place of the trees that were removed, more than 1,400 native Acacia trees were added. The topography was completely rebuilt, shaping the formerly flat golf course with rolling hills and contours. We-Ko-Pa Golf Club
Since opening in December of 2001, We-Ko-Pa Golf Club’s Cholla Course, designed by Scott Miller, has been one of Arizona’s most highly regarded. With such high praise coming from the likes of Sports Illustrated (Top Ten Best New Courses in the World) and 2006-07 ZAGAT Survey (one of the “50 Most Popular Golf Courses in the US”), it’s easy to see why the Cholla Course has gained the following it has in the golf community.
In December of 2006, We-Ko-Pa unveiled the Saguaro course, a Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw collaboration. The popular design tandem best known for Sand Hills in Nebraska and Friar’s Head on Long Island, incorporated design elements into Saguaro not commonly seen in the desert southwest, giving Saguaro more of a classic course feel. Greens and tee boxes are in close proximity making the course an enjoyable walk and many of the green complexes offer an opening in the front to allow for the run-up shot, an option almost extinct in modern golf. Like the Cholla course, The Saguaro Course has garnered favor from national audiences. GOLF Magazine chose the course as one of the “Top 10 New Courses You can Play.” Golfweek cited Saguaro as one of the Best New Courses in 2007. They also chose Saguaro as the number one public access course in Arizona and Cholla as number two.
Both of We-Ko-Pa’s courses are threaded through an open expanse overlooking the Verde and Salt River Valleys, Red Mountain, and the legendary Superstition Mountains with no real-estate development to impede the panoramic views.
Whether you play the award-winning Cholla Course or the brand new Saguaro Course, at We-Ko-Pa you’re in for a desert golf experience unlike any other in Arizona.
